Mall Nukke is among the strongest and most original of the collage artists in Estonia and possibly one of the pop artists with greatest awareness. In Nukke’s work, pop art is neither expressive iconography nor metaphysical symbolism; rather, it is a critique of the material used for creating the works, a critique that develops into an environmental critique only at the level of the content of the artwork. So, for example, the fictionalising, constructive power of the news media is revealed only when it has created a city.
Nukke’s collages have always been characterised by an exceptionally meticulous, manual rendering of the picture surface, something the artist has abided by into the era of digital collage. By harmoniously fusing traditional techniques with the possibilities of the digital era without losing her personal style in the process, she has succeeded in doing what many artists, or entire disciplines, have failed.
