EESTI FOTOKUNSTIMESS 2014
PHOTOGRAPHIC ART FAIR 2014

Katrina Tang

What distinguishes fashion photography from the freestyle work of a fine art photographer is often no more than the costumes that the photographer has the models wear. As soon as a photographer starts to do freestyle work, the models lose their costumes, but both the poses and the sense of the environment remain similar in the photographs. The children in the fashion photographs of Katrina Tang appear like strange little grown-ups. This makes it all the more contrastingly evident that the children of Suigu basic school, through whom the artist is seeking to document life in disappearing rural schools, are unburdened with things. The children pose, but they are posing with the environment rather than clothes. Tang seems to take pleasure in the Estonian landscape, especially in its autumnal evanescence, and so in her photographs, life in a rural school, one inevitably destined to fade away, also comes across as a bitter-sweet condition, the fleeting beauty of which the artist wants to capture.
