Jaanus Samma
The eyes of the world of art are currently on Jaanus Samma as the Estonian representative at the next Venice Biennale. Last year, he won the Köler Prize. And before that – one could say with some reservations – he attracted wider attention with his project “Tarbekunst geiklubile” (Applied art for a gay club). The overtly homoerotic series of photos directly addressed the gay community itself, attending to its aesthetic and social norms. However, precisely because of the fact that the series did not address homosexuality as a social problem but as an aesthetic norm in its own right, it received conflicting interpretations.
